DESCRIPTION
The Department of Beni is located in the Amazon region, in the
northeastern part of the Republic on the border with Brazil. It is
characterized by its extensive forests, its tropical climate, and
its wide, large volume rivers; it is a region that is full of Nature.
In the Department of
Beni there are large cattle raising ranches. The Department of Beni is
the largest beef producer in Bolivia.
Beni is one of the
regions with the greatest biodiversity in the world, with an
incomparable abundance of unique species of flora and fauna.
Several ethnic groups
have settled in this region, but the most prominent culture is the
Moxos culture (1000 B.C.) located in the Moxos Hills. This is a swampy
area with a high level of rainfall, which caused the ancient peoples
to build their towns and ceremonial centers on artificial hills that
guard important archeological remains from that era. Its complex
hydraulic system includes the construction of artificial embankments
which acted as containment dikes, artificial drainage and adduction
channels, and it also includes artificial lagoons that were permanent
water reserves for irrigation. Farming was done by means of ridges
that have resisted time and even now remain intact. The traditions and
festivities of the Moxos people, with extremely showy musical
expressions, are an outstanding part of the cultural estate in the
region of Beni.
CLIMATE
Tropical and humid, with an average yearly rainfall that varies
between 1,000 mm3 and 4,000 mm3.
