DESCRIPTION
Located in Bolivia’s central highlands, the Department of Oruro is
the flokclore capital of the country. It is the center of the
Bolivian railroad system and its mining tradition is known both
nationally and internationally. Nature, despite the region’s
aridness, has given Oruro abundant resources. Besides the rich
mineral fields there are other natural riches such as the thermal
springs in Capachos (7 km.), Obrajes (20 km.), and Pazña (7 km.).
Oruro also has active volcanoes and lacustrine ecosystems such as
Poopo Lake, which has abundant flamencos and other types of aquatic
water fowl, besides deserts where it is not uncommon to be a victim
of mirages. There are also large salt fields.
CLIMATE
Oruro’s climate is cold in the highlands, and cold and dry in the
rough, bleak tablelands. In summer the temperature is semi-temperate.
