AREA ATTRACTIONS
Amboró National Park in central Bolivia is a nature reserve with over 800 species of birds, over 125 mammalian species including puma, ocelot, and the rare Spectacled Bear. So far 2,659 plant species have been recognized in Amboró National Park. Some of the most noteworthy tree species are Bigleaf Mahogany, mountain pine, black walnut, limachu, khellu khellu, cebillo, bibosi, ambaiba, pacay, and clavo rojo. In the cloud-enveloped forests there are extensive patches of giant arboreal ferns. In addition, there are pachiuva, açaí palms and several species of endemic orchids. 127 species of mammals have been registered; among them 43 species of bats. Among the large mammals we find the spectacled bear (locally known as the jucumari), the jaguar, and the Giant Anteater. The park presents a high level of endemism, 105 species of amphibians with 50 species of toads alone. The number of bird species observed within the area exceeds 840, or more than 60% of the country s total.
El Fuerte (The Fortress).
One of the most important archeological monuments of pre-Columbian time in Bolivia can be found: El Fuerte (The Fortress). This archeological place has been declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. This mysterious place has been given many hypothetical explanations for its origins. It is supposed that El Fuerte is the work of the Amazonian pre-Incan “Chané” culture, and later on was used as an advanced city by the Incas and finally by the Spanish colonists that turned El Fuerte into a fortress. El Fuerte is the largest carved stone in the world. This archaeological monument reaches a height of 1,949 meters above sea level and is on the ridge of a hill of a sandy rock where ancient cultures sculptured figures but emphasized snakes and pumas, as well as waterways and wells, triangular and rectangular seats, vaulted niches, among other details.
Refugio Los Volcanes.
Refugio Los Volcanes is located in the southern part of Amboró National Park. Tucked away in a deep valley, Los Volcanes offers spectacular views of sandstone rock cliffs as well as the tropical forests which surround the Sanctuary. There are also trails offering opportunities to appreciate the flora and fauna. World renowned ornithologists such as Ridgeley, Tudor and others have visited Refugio Los Volcanes on several opportunities - their bird list register more than 200 species - and the local botanist Roberto Vasquez has identified more than 100 species of orchids and bromeliads.
